Boylan Heights

Raleigh City Waste Services

To those who have recently moved to the Boylan Heights Neighborhood, we welcome you.  The city services that are provided in the neighborhood can be somewhat daunting if you’re not used to them, so Jeff Groves has come up with a list of them and what to expect.

Garbage Collection

The City of Raleigh provides what they call “backyard garbage collection” twice weekly.   The city workers will come into your yard and carry your garbage to the curb for you even if you keep your garbage cans in your backyard.  This is done twice each week on Tuesdays and Fridays.  The city workers will take your garbage cans to the curb, but they do not carry them back, so please make sure that you take your garbage cans off of the curb when you get home that evening.

Information about garbage collection is available on the web at http://www.raleigh-nc.org/sws/ garbage.htm

Curbside Recycling Collection

The City of Raleigh also provides curbside recycling services.  For Boylan Heights, this is done every other week on Mondays.  You are responsible for carrying your recycling to the curb before Monday mornings – the city workers will not come looking for it like they do for garbage collection.  A wide variety of materials are recycled.  A list of recyclable items is on the City of Raleigh recycling web site at http://www.raleigh-nc.org/sws/curbside.htm

Upcoming Curbside Recycling dates are October 27th, November 10th, and November 24th.

Yard Waste Collection

Another service provided by the City of Raleigh is yard waste collection.  This includes debris left over from lawn mowing, tree trimming, and other activities that produce plant waste from your yard.  It takes place early in the morning each Wednesday.

This material must be kept separate from your garbage and must be organized into manageable bundles.  Grass clipping and other non-limb debris needs to be placed in clear plastic bags near the curb of the street.  Any limb debris has to be cut into five-foot sections and gathered into manageable sized bundles.  If debris is left in large, unwieldy piles on the curb, the city workers will not pick it up.  Tie your small bundles of limb debris with biodegradable twine or twine made of natural material.  The clear plastic bags that you use for non-limb debris will be emptied and left on the ground where they were found for you to reuse or throw-away.

More details about yard waste collection are provided at http://www.raleigh-nc.org/sws/yardwaste.htm.

Seasonal Leaf Collection

The city will send its workers out every few weeks during the fall with a vacuum truck and collect leaves that you have raked and  piled in your yard next to the curb.  Be careful not to allow the leaves to pile up in the street itself and pay attention on the days that they come to your street to make sure that you move your car out of the way for the vacuum truck.  The city workers are pretty nimble with the vacuum device, but parked cars can sometimes block them from doing their job.  Information on Seasonal Leaf Collection is available at: http://www.raleigh-nc.org/transportation/leaf.htm

Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is the only type of waste that city workers will not come to your house to remove for you.  You have to take your household hazardous waste to one of the Wake County collection centers on designated days during the month.

You can find the scheduled times during the month for HHW disposal at: http://www.raleigh-nc.org/sws/hazardou.htm

Follow their directions on the web site for the types of materials accepted and how they should be delivered.  If your HHW is listed on the web site as acceptable, all you have to do is place the material in a sealed container in the trunk of your car and drive to the collection center on the scheduled day and time.

Once you get to the collection center follow the signs to the hazardous waste collection station.  When you arrive at the station, stay in your car and a city worker will come to the window of your car and ask you where the material is located in your car.  All you have to do is stay in your car, tell them where the material is in your car, so that they can retrieve the material.  The employee will even ask if you want the container that you used back or not.
