HISTORIC SIGN TOPPERS IN BOYLAN HEIGHTS

April 2005

The historic sign toppers project is a project sponsored by the Raleigh Historic District Commission  (RHDC) in celebration of the commission's 40th anniversary, which was December 2001.  The commission got a late start on the project, had staff turnover, a change in concept, and production challenges but finally the sign toppers are up!  On Thursday April 7, 2005, Boylan Heights had sign toppers erected. They are being erected in each of the five locally-designated historic overlay districts: Blount Street, Boylan Heights, Capitol Square, Moore Square, and Oakwood. Every intersection within the boundaries of each district will receive a marker.

The proposal and the topper design was discussed with the neighborhood associations, refined, and then approved by City Council. The issue was presented at the Boylan Heights Association meeting on 9/24/02.

The project was funded by RHDC. The installation of the sign toppers is being conducted by the Raleigh's Public Works Department Streets Division, on a time-as-available basis. The commission is grateful for the city's support and assistance.

The RHDC felt that by providing the sign toppers it would help bring stronger identity and recognition to the historic districts, and to the historic overlay district program. It lends cachet to the areas, and distinguishes them from other older neighborhoods, and from National Register districts.
