historic sign toppers project is a project sponsored by the Raleigh Historic
District Commission (RHDC)
in celebration of the commission's 40th anniversary, which was December
2001. The commission got a late start on
the project, had staff turnover, a change in concept, and production challenges
but finally the sign toppers are up! On

The
proposal and the topper design was discussed with the neighborhood
associations, refined, and then approved by City Council. The issue was
presented at the Boylan Heights Association meeting on 9/24/02. The
project was funded by RHDC. The installation of the sign toppers is being
conducted by the |
The RHDC felt that by providing the sign toppers it would help bring stronger identity and recognition to the historic districts, and to the historic overlay district program. It lends cachet to the areas, and distinguishes them from other older neighborhoods, and from National Register districts.
