The Boylan Heights Newsletter - Historical Information

How long has the Boylan Heights newsletter existed?

It’s difficult to figure out when the first Boylan Heights newsletter was ever distributed. In some historical material its indicated that a newsletter called “The View From The Heights” was produced and distributed in the 1970’s. However I’ve called around attempting to get copies of old newsletters to review and August 1984 is the oldest I’ve located. Since August 1984, the newsletter has been called by various names. Initially it was named Boylan Heights Historic District Newsletter. Other names subsequently used were: “Boylan Heights Newsletter”, “Boylan Heights (News)letter,” Boylan Heights Newsletter: The Voice of the Boylan Heights Association,” “Boylan Heights Monthly - The Neighborhood Network,”, and now simply - “Boylan Heights Monthly.”

Who has been involved with the newsletter?

Past editors have been: Anne McLaurin, Susan Parry, Jeff Forshee, Glenn Plott, Aldo Melito, Elison Wolper, Adryon Clay, Lea Davis, Catherine Bray, Kris Troost, Leigh Shamblin, Louise Anderson, Deanna Kerrigan, and Leslie Kellenberger. Numerous others delivered the newsletter, including a fair number of the above.

What subjects were covered in past newsletters?

There seems to be a consistent pattern of topics in the newsletters. They include: gardening tips, safety tips and concerns about crime, concerns about dogs knocking over trash cans and cats spraying things and both needing “restraining”, announcements about neighborhood porch sales, picnics, festivals, Pink Truck Day, concerns about traffic, information on Boylan Heights Association activities, announcements of births, deaths, new arrivals to the neighborhood, and folks hospitalized, announcements of city-wide events, requests to keep the sidewalks clear, and general information for homeowners. Interestingly, in 1988 and 1989, a couple of interviews were done with neighbors called “Spotlight,” which highlighted individual neighbors, much like “Meet Your Neighbor” does now. A couple of the early 1984 issues actually started out with scripture verses such as “Deuteronomy Chapter 19, verse 14, Proverbs Chapter 22, verse 28, and Exodus Chapter 20, verse 16.”
