Within Walking Distance

“Hire a Sitter and Go Underground”

Does your summer vacation this year include painting the back bedroom, a trip with your in-laws, a string of hot muggy nights poolside with your child’s swim team, or a once in a lifetime adventure of cleaning your basement?  If so, it’s time you got away.  Hire a babysitter, put on your walking shoes: stroll up Boylan Avenue, turn left on Morgan Street and walk until you find Charlie Goodnight’s (on the left before you get to Hillsborough).

Situated in the basement of Charlie Goodnight’s, the Underground is a cool, refreshing, and rather delightful way to relax on a hot summer night with a group of adults or just someone special.  This is NOT a family restaurant.  There is no “children’s menu,” and no earthly reason to ruin such a good meal with a fidgety child on your lap or a surly teenager munching on your ear. This is a grown-up place…be grateful.

The Underground is another trendy small plate restaurant.  All menu items are $10 or less and are meant to be tasting plates.  Two tasting plates per person would make a nice small meal; add dessert and you’ve got a winning evening.

We went with another couple, ordered one of each of the vegetarian dishes (flat bread with hummus & olive pesto $5; hand cut potato fries with garlic aioli $4; greenbean salad with honey, almonds & gorgonzola $5; spinach & gorgonzola fritatta $6; zucchini parmesan with fresh mozzarella & basil $7; crispy polenta with goat cheese, black olives & arugula $7) and two fish dishes (cured salmon, potato pancake, sour cream & chives $7; red snapper with spinach risotto & bacon $9).  We also sampled two desserts (lemon tart with blueberries & cream $6; fallen chocolate soufflé cake with chocolate sauce $6), and drank a good bottle of wine.  The plates came one or two at a time giving the meal a leisurely pace.  Dinner for the four of us, including the wine, was less than $100.

My top picks were the red snapper with spinach risotto & bacon; the crispy polenta with goat cheese, black olives & arugula; and, the fries.  The risotto was a creamy blend of spinach and herbs against a crisp grilled thin steak of red snapper.  It was both great risotto and a delicious combination of flavors and textures.  The polenta was terrific, just the way you wish you could make such a dish, and unfortunately, the French fries were killer.

In fact, I think I’d walk to the Underground on most any hot summer night just to have a cold beer and a plate of those salty, crisp fries.  Okay, so maybe I’d have a slice of lemon tart as well.

Welcome Neighbors

The Neighborhood Welcome Committee is continuing to welcome new residents to our great neighborhood.  New residents receive a packet of information about Boylan Heights, including trivia, helpful hints, event information and maps.  The committee welcomes newcomers with friendly faces and tasty treats. So far this year we have welcomed six new households to the neighborhood and are continuing all the time. Please let us know as you become aware of new neighbors so that we can make them feel right at home.  If you know of new neighbors or are one yourself please contact Lyman Collins, 603 S Boylan Ave; email: lyman.collins@townofcary.org; phone 919-462-3861 (day), 919-821-0899 (evenings).

Safe Routes to School

As a resident of Boylan Heights, and parent of two children whom I occasionally walk to school, I appreciate very much the walkable nature of our neighborhood.  It does sometimes, however, feel as though we are on an island surrounded by unfriendly streets and speeding traffic.  In an effort to learn more about safe walking and biking for students and their families, I recently attended a workshop titled Safe Routes to School (SR2S) sponsored by NC DOT at Wiley Elementary.  Many interesting ideas were presented including the “walking school bus”:  one or two parents escort a group of students to school stopping at each house to pick them up.

At the conclusion of the day, we were all charged to come up with at least one action item we would pursue.  I volunteered to take information to my Neighborhood Association and see if I could raise any interest in following up on several points:

1         The lack of pedestrian crossing signals at the intersections of W. Hargett and S. Boylan and Morgan St. and S. Boylan.

2        The badly overgrown sidewalks surrounding the apartment complex at the corner of Boylan and W. Hargett.  The leaves, branches and debris on these sidewalks make it nearly impossible to push a stroller up that block and hide all manner of dog poop, broken glass and trash.

3        In addition, for Wiley parents current and future, the speed and volume of traffic along St. Mary’s needs to be addressed.  Possibilities include additional school zone signage on side streets as well as Saint Mary’s; and curb modifications that contribute to slowing traffic.

I realize that we are faced with a huge challenge in the preservation of some part of Dorothea Dix campus, but I see this as part of the same issue:  maintaining and improving the quality of life in downtown neighborhoods.  For anyone who would like further information, including numerous web addresses relating to bicycle and pedestrian safety, or if you have concerns or information to share with me, you may contact me at 919-838-9008 or jollypolk@mindspring.com.

Heard in the ‘hood....

On May 30 the neighborhood had its Annual Memorial Day Picnic at Project Enlightenment.  There were plenty of good eats to share and plants to swap.  A great time was had by all.

On June 3 we celebrated our Annual Graduation Party on McCulloch St.  The kazoo rendition of Pomp and Circumstance was unforgettable as always.  Bob Wells has definitely missed his calling with the Grand Ole Opry.  Congratulations to our High School graduates Lettice Campbell, Ilona Harabin, Jack Hill, Samantha Keating, Chelsea Nicolas, Geoff Smith and Caitlin Wells.  And our Elementary graduates Adam Forrest, Noah Jolly, Tristan Maurer, Jan Jones and Johniqua Brice.  Special thanks to Susan Parry and Anne McLaurin for organizing this special yearly event.

The Big Boylan Bash, our neighborhood block party, is Sunday August 28th from 5 - 10 pm at Dupont Circle Park here in Boylan Heights. A new Boylan Heights t-shirt has been designed and will debut at The Bash. Put it on your calendar! If you'd like to volunteer to help with the event or would like more information, call Chris Weedy at 919-755-3558 or email at cweedy@aol.com.

For information on the nine homes that have sold thus far in Boylan Heights this year go to BoylanHeights.org and click on Real Estate.

CASA has a landscape crew that has been cutting grass in Boylan Heights for one year.  The CASA Landscape Crew would like to offer it’s services to anyone who needs their grass cut or shrubs pruned.  The cost to cut the grass, trim, edge and blow the grass clippings will be $35 per visit.  Any other services will require an estimate.

For more information, please call Phil Brickle at 919-623-4087 or CASA at 919-754-9960, ext. 13.

SIDEWALKS IN BOYLAN HEIGHTS

It's pleasant to walk or jog around our neighborhood in every season of the year.  Unfortunately, there are some sections of our sidewalks that are neither safe nor barely passable because of broken concrete and overgrown trees and scrubs.  While the City of Raleigh holds each of us who owns property legally responsible for the maintenance of sidewalks and the vegetation along them, neglected sidewalks reflect badly on the entire neighborhood.  Please come to the Boylan Heights Association Meeting on June 28 to discuss issues related to broken and obstructed sidewalks.  If you're unable to attend, please let me know your thoughts by contacting me (telephone:  919-755-3558; email:  jimmyomaha@aol.com ).  Thanks!

On the Outside

“Ground Sounds”

by Harriet Bellerjeau

During my walks in the neighborhood, I notice what an incredible variety of garden styles and plants that abound.  Some yards produce vegetables and fruits, some are rich in flowers and woody ornamentals (shrubs) and trees.  Some are 'au naturale' and some are lawn.  But we all share a love for plants and the benefits they give while affording us endless opportunities to be out in our yards.  As well, we share a common ground (no pun intended) concerning the care and maintenance of our green treasures.  Here are some tips for June:

  1. Watch out for white fly -- a white, sticky substance at the tip end of leaf stems.  All varieties of Euonymus, Gardenia, sometimes Azaleas, Wisteria, Phlox, Daylilies, to name a few, are susceptible.  The key is the white, smudge like substance and small darting white flies.  A safe treatment is Safer Soap sold at local garden centers and hardware stores that carry yard supplies.
  2. Also check for Powdery Mildew on Dogwood and Phlox mainly.  Check the underside of the leaves.  The leaves will be a bit discolored, maybe even some light brown spots on the underside that look as if someone powdered them.  Some garden centers carry a non toxic fungicide.  Ask for it.
  3. If your Daylily leaves are turning yellow with some brown steaks and look stunted, they may be diseased with Botrytis Blight. The treatment is with a copper fungicide.  This is a toxic fungicide when wet.  A good 2 hours dry time is required before working in areas where you have sprayed.  Untreated plants should be pulled and bagged for curbside pick up.

With all herbicides and pesticides, please read all labels and directions for use before using.  When spraying wear protective clothing, rubber gloves and goggles.  Keep children and pets out of the area until the plants are completely dry (generally 2 hours dry time is recommended) and store chemicals safely out of reach from children and pets.  Remember to change clothes and wash up immediately after applications.

In the meantime water responsibly, cut the dead wood out of your woodies, try to keep the wisteria to a dull run and if you haven't already done so, tip prune your azaleas.  They'll be starting to set their buds for next season over the summer.

See you next month....
