Our Privacy on the Boylan Heights
Website
We are concerned about the policies of
the Website Committee, or at least the way the Website and email list are being
administered. There is an article about one of our Association members
that she is hurt by, and that she objects to. She has been asking since
December that it be removed, and as of Jan 17th it has not. We have been
trying to schedule a meeting with the Website committee since mid December, but
they were unable to schedule a meeting before this newsletter deadline.
In addition, the email administrator
has refused to allow us to post the first of these three motions for discussion
on the email list. We hope you will attend the January Boylan Heights
Association meeting to discuss these issues and to pass these motions so they
can become the foundation of website policies that will support the people who
live in the neighborhood and use this communication tool to bring us closer
together.
Motion 1: The Boylan Heights Association website will
not display any information about an Association Member which that member
objects to. Such material about an
Association Member must be approved in advance by that Member before it is
posted on the Association Website.
Reason 1:
We believe that the association website shouldn't have any information about
you that you don't want on the website. We believe that the purpose of
the website is to improve the quality of life and promote harmony in the
neighborhood. Website pages about you that you don't like upset you and
your friends, causes discord, and isn't necessary. Because articles on the website
are completely public for the whole world to see, and they are more formal than
an email, they should be approved in advance of posting. This is as easy
to do as emailing the article to the people who are mentioned and getting their
"OK". Really, when you think of it, it is just the polite thing
to do.
Motion 2: Any Association Member who is
identified in an email, that they did not send, may request to the website
administrator that such email be removed from the archives, and the website
administrator shall remove the specified email from the archives within 2
business days.
Reason 2: We believe that if someone
writes something about you on our email list that you don't like, then you
should be able to have that email removed from the permanent archive.
We don't want the email list to be censored in advance
because we believe that the free flow of information is good for the
neighborhood. There will, however, always be occasional problems because
it is natural for personalities to clash in any group of people. So there
may be times when someone says something about you that isn't true, or you
don't appreciate. If that happens it can't be taken back once the email
goes out, but at least it can be removed from the archives so it doesn't sit there
and continue to annoy you.
Motion 3: The email archives will be protected by password
so that only members of the list can access the archives. All members of the
association may be members of the list.
Only members of the association may be members of the list.
Reason 3: We believe that the Association Email Archives
should be protected from PUBLIC viewing and searching from the internet.
We think this is important because we discuss baby sitting and house sitting
among other things, and we don't want people to "eavesdrop" on the
list to discover when a house might be empty, or adults might be absent.
This is only two examples, but there are others where information could be used
to find opportunities to take advantage of neighbors.
The current situation is that the archives IS password
protected, so this motion just makes what is being
done a formal policy.
"ONLY members..." deserves further
consideration... there are legitimate reasons why people who aren't in the
neighborhood are helpful on the list. There have occasionally been
comments from the Historic Commission that have cleared up some misunderstandings
that were being discussed.
Thus there are advantages and
disadvantages to only allowing association members to be on the list. We
look forward to a productive discussion on these issues at the January meeting.

Huberman, Amy Marschall, Kim Stone,
