Meet Your Neighbor: Esther Goetze

May 2004

Esther Goetze lives in Boylan Heights at 513 Florence Street. She moved to Florence Street in 1949 and has lived here ever since. Initially, Ester lived with her husband, Bennie, in a duplex at 519 Florence and then moved to her current home in 1955. She and Bennie rented 513 Florence from the Dickenson’s who lived next door, and then bought the house in 1970. Together they raised 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, in the house. Bennie died in 1982. Now Esther has a house mate, Mariela Vera, who moved in in 1991.

Esther was born in Person County and grew up in Durham. Her family moved to Raleigh and she graduated from Broughton High School in 1941. She and Bennie were married in 1944 after meeting at work at CP & L. She continued to work at CP &L until her first pregnancy. First there was a boy, then a girl, then a boy, then a girl, then a boy, and finally a girl. Esther went on to work for the city and then the state. She retired from the state in 1983. Since then she has been a faithful volunteer at her church - Forest Hills Baptist Church, where she has been a member since 1946. Esther was an assistant to a minister and helped develop an ESL program at the church. She is still active with this program, which provides English classes every Wednesday night to Chinese, African, and Hispanic immigrants.

Besides helping with the ESL program, Esther is busy with her 14 grandchildren, enjoying watching them play baseball. At age 80, she is an avid bowler, bowling twice a week in the winter and once a week in the summer. She is a regular attendee of the Boylan Heights Association and has been since its inception. Esther has saved Association newsletters from April 1985.

Esther’s three bedroom home was built in 1929. In her back yard she has a huge fig tree and one remaining pecan tree. Hurricane Fran took out two large pecan trees in September 1996. Her property extends to the creek that runs along Rosengarten Street. She says she’d like to see the Rosengarten area developed into a nicer area than it currently is. She regrets not having attended the last BHA meeting to find out the latest from the Westgate project, but friends dropped by unexpectedly and she didn’t have the heart to tell them she had a meeting to go to. Esther states she likes all the Boylan Heights activities, but especially mentioned the Big Boylan Bash last year. She says  “I loved it!” She showed off her Boylan Heights T-shirt which she proudly says she got at the Bash.

Meet Your Neighbors:

John and Valerie Zaloom

June 2004

John and Valerie Zaloom live at 405 S. Boylan with 2 year old Lola, a “very spoiled” Shih-Tzu. They bought their house from Tom Winton and Robin Gault in September 2002, after moving to Boylan Heights from New York City. John had lived in New York City for 7 years and Valerie for 5 years prior to getting married the week before they moved to Boylan Heights. What attracted them to Boylan Heights was the diversity and apparent political involvement of the neighborhood, the historic aspects of the neighborhood, finding a house “with character”, and Boylan Heights’ proximity to downtown.

Valerie was raised in a military family so she spent her childhood in North Carolina, Hawaii, California and Rhode Island. She attended Duke for her undergraduate studies and went to the University of Michigan Law School. Valerie is an attorney and works as a commercial litigator for Ellis & Winters in Cary. John grew up mostly in Texas, but also lived in Alabama and Greensboro, NC. He attended Texas A & M for his undergraduate work, and then the University of Texas Law School. He earned a Masters of Law at the University of London. John is an attorney and works as a commercial and employment litigator at Moore & Van Allen in Durham.

John and Valerie have traveled the world extensively, John having been to over 40 countries, and Valerie not far behind that. Last year’s travels took them to Russia and Grenada. This summer they plan to visit Sweden, The Czech Republic, Germany, England and Spain. This 30’s something couple began traveling in college while studying abroad. Besides traveling they enjoy playing tennis, riding bikes, sailing, and spending time at the beach. Valerie is an aficionado at cooking.

John and Valerie’s 3 bedroom home built in 1910 has undergone significant renovation since their purchase in 2002. They have redone the electricity and plumbing, as so many homes in Boylan Heights need, but also they have completely renovated their upstairs bathroom and a sunroom, and have built a new deck on the back of their house and begun clearing out their backyard. One of their favorite things to do is sit on their back deck and enjoy the serenity. John and Valerie have plans to continue the caretaking of their first home such as removing the vinyl siding from their home, putting on a new front porch, and refinishing all the floors. They also hope to have a party someday to show off their hard work.

John and Valerie’s dreams for the neighborhood include wanting to see: more development downtown, new tenants move into the newly renovated train depot, improvements to the greenway, a park be established on the Dorothea Dix property and speed control on Boylan Ave. Their ultimate dream is to work downtown instead of commuting, as they do now. Their favorite Boylan Heights’ activities have been the Artwalk and The Big Boylan Bash. Say hello to John and Valerie as you see them walk Lola!
