The Big Boylan Bash 2004

The incredible Boylan Heights block party - “The Big Boylan Bash 2004” will be Sunday August 1 from 5 to 9 pm at Dupont Circle Park.

The first organizational meeting was Sunday April 18. At that meeting, we divided into small committees and decided that we will be doing most of the work through the committees. The committees and their point people are provided below. Please consider helping with this year's Bash. The best way to start is by calling the point people and ask what you can.  You can choose exactly how much or how little you want to participate.

The Boylan Heights web site (BoylanHeights.org) began a new section called Meet Your Neighbor in April. Each month we highlight a new family.

Here is the April 2004 interview….

Meet Your Neighbor: April 2004

Deborah Whitfield and Robert Nash

Deborah Whitfield and Robert Nash live at 901 W. South Street with Simon, an 8- month old wire fox terrier, and Tiggertail “Tig” Whitfield, a 15 year old cat. They bought their house from Mack and Julie Paul in 1996. They discovered the house “by accident” while considering several houses in the Five Points area. What attracted them to the neighborhood was that the owner lived in the house and was moving within the neighborhood, that the house had had repairs and “had potential,” and that the neighborhood offered a setting where they could get to know their neighbors, as opposed to the Lake Johnson neighborhood they came from where neighbors merely waved to each other, if that. When they moved here Cutler Street Grocery was in business and that was an attraction.

Deborah is from Martin County, in eastern North Carolina. Deborah attended the College of the Albemarle. She is a part-time RN at Wake Med on the neuro-rehab unit and a part-time antique dealer working in private sales. She has been collecting antiques since the early 1980’s. Robert is from Lilburn, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. He did his undergraduate work at Georgia Tech and attended Duke Business School for his Masters. He is a manager of Environment, Health and Safety at Glaxo Smith Kline.

Deborah has two adult sons, John and Christopher. She and Robert spend their time “entertaining” Simon and gardening together. If you haven’t seen their front and back yards you are missing a gem! Robert built a greenhouse in their backyard three years ago. It took a year to build. Better Homes and Gardens will feature their greenhouse and yard in their May 2004 issue.  Recently Robert installed a

(Meet Your Neighbors cont. in next column…)

humidification system and a drip system. The greenhouse has beautiful orchids, an orange tree, African violets, and gorgeous green plants. The greenhouse is complete with speakers to provide music and a place to sit and read. Besides the greenhouse, the back yard has several arbors (adorned by Wisteria and Georgia Rose), a deck, and a beautiful courtyard, all designed by Deborah and Robert. An large agave cactus welcomes you into the back yard.

Deborah and Robert’s 3 bedroom house was built between 1910- 1915. Besides doing all the outside work they have opened up a fireplace and installed coal-burning gas logs. (For information on the Raleigh gas log company they used, go to the Boylan Heights forum and click on Neighborhood Offerings.) Other updates include putting in a new kitchen floor and stripping the hardwood floors.

Deborah and Robert’s dreams for the neighborhood include wanting to see the Dix property become an open park, having a “heart-felt interest in cleaning up the neighborhood, and wanting to see it’s appearance improved.  As Boylan Heighters they enjoy our neighborhood web site, being close to the Farmer’s Market, Pullen Park and the Flea Market, and participating in BH events such as the Art Walk, Pink Truck Day, and “the pumpkins at the bridge.”
