The Big Boylan Bash 2004

The Big Boylan Bash 2004 block party was a lot of fun. Our raindate, Sunday August 8, was a lot cooler than it was just the week before. The fantastic signs, designed by Dawson Roark, and updated daily by Santiago Hernandez and David Tremblay were great reminders about the event. Thanks also to Santiago Hernandez and David Tremblay for the beautiful flyer announcing The Bash. The balloons along the BH bridge were clear markers that a big event was occurring! Thanks to Danette Foltz and  Natalia Weedy for blowing up all those balloons! Thanks to Alice Wilson for the beautiful posters.

The Bash was well attended by neighbors and 4-footed friends. Folks enjoyed catching up with each other over a plate of homemade food and a beer. We enjoyed some wonderful food by some great cooks in the neighborhood. Thanks to Caron Register and KD Reeves for organizing the food and buying the supplies. The ice cream donated by PSNC was a big hit! Everyone was shocked it was free! And there was plenty for all. Thanks to Neil Barry for managing the ice cream project. Thanks to Moonlight Pizza for donating 2 lasagnas and a wonderfully huge tossed salad. Thanks to Paul Meyer and Caron Register for greeting neighbors at the food table. Thanks to Jim Kellenberger for managing the beer, and thanks, also, to his trusty assistant, Jeff Groves. Thanks, Jay Spain, for arranging for the outdoor toilet. That came in handy, didn’t it? Thanks, Ray Lanier, John Montgomery, Susan Parry, CASA (410 S. Boylan), Don Palmer, Leila May, Pietro Macaluso, Jessica Schrider Macaluso, Paul Meyer, Caron Register for donating tables. Thanks, Anne and Meg McLaurin, Jay Spain, and KD Reeves for donating chairs. Thanks for all the coolers donated.

To start off The Bash, Major Dave, DJ, born and raised in Boylan Heights, provided music and karaoke. As you know, Esther Goetze from Florence Street is his mother. Thanks, Heidi Nelson, for your karaoke song. Next year we will have more brave souls! Major Dave was then followed by a wonderful female vocalist, Christy Smith and Her Band. They were then followed by The Ohio Farm Cats. Fantastic music! Thanks to Kelly Cunningham for arranging the music again this year. Kelly, you are awesome! Thanks Billy PeacockRandy Kelly, Jade Brennan, and Jim Hutter for the electricity.

The Bash children played with bubbles and drew with chalk on the wall (facing the BLAM building), while others had their faces painted. Thanks Catherine Bray, Kathryn Bray, and Carolyn Davis for the face painting. The children loved it.

The Bash was attended by 2 candidates for Register of Deeds- Laura Riddick and Nick Sikorski, along with Brad Miller- member of US House of Representatives, and Deborah Ross, member of NC State House of Representatives. Don’t forget to vote!

Steve Guth provided his concession stand with soft drinks, water, ice, and popcorn served by Janet Waltrous, Santiago Hernandez, and Steve, himself. The soft drinks were donated by Bill People of Ambassador Entertainment (Rialto, Colony, Six Forks, Mission Valley, and Lumina Cinemas.) The food tables, BHA booth, face painting, stage, and café areas were set up by Jeff Groves, Brenda Corbin, Allison Corbin, David Corbin, Jimmy Creech, David Tremblay, Santiago Hernandez, and Steve Guth. Thanks to Leslie Kellenberger, BHA treasurer, for operating the BHA booth and selling BH t-shirts. Thanks to Jimmy Creech, David Trembley, Santiago Hernandez, Steve Guth, Pietro Macaluso, Jessica Schrider Macaluso, Paul Meyer, and Caron Register for cleaning up after The Bash.

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors this year: Peter Rumsey (good seeing you again this year), Paul Setliff (Nice meeting you, glad you could come to The Bash), Chris Yetter, Tommy Fonville, and PSNC, a SCANA Corporation. We appreciate your support of our neighborhood.

Thanks to the Bash organizing committee (Paul, Caron, Jay, KD, Jimmy, Santiago, David, Steve, Jim, Kelly) for the wonderful planning.

Pictures from the Big Boylan Bash are posted to the Photo Gallery.
